What exactly is strength training?This is an exercise program in which a type of resistance is used to overload the muscle in order to increase muscle mass to develop strength. There are many benefits to a strength training program in combination with cardiovascular activity.

Increased muscle increases the metabolic rate causing the body to burn more calories throughout the day! An increase in our lean muscle mass helps to decrease body fat. Strength training can also help increase bone density to help prevent osteoporosis. Stronger muscles improve mobility which helps to prevent injuries.

Athletes have enhanced performance in their sports from a proper strength training program. Power, endurance, balance and stability will improve, helping athletes in basketball, golf, and tennis to name a few. All athletes benefit from a strength training program designed specifically for their sport. Stronger muscles also help speed recovery from injuries.

Being physically active keeps us young, alive and energetic. Strength training keeps us strong enough to keep participating in our favorite activities. Stronger muscles and joints will help to improve poor posture. All of these benefits lead to feeling better and looking better, which leads to improved self-esteem and increased self-confidence.

Is there anyone who shouldn’t strength train? You should always have clearance from your physician before beginning any exercise program. Pregnant women should have already been in a strength training program before becoming pregnant, and be cleared by their doctor. Young children will benefit more from other types of exercise. No matter what age, consult a fitness professional or personal trainer when starting your new program.
